Visually impaired archer sets record at Warrior Games

August 16, 2019

RIGHT NOW–
THE ARCHERY
COMPETITION… TAKING CENTER STAGE AT THE WARRIOR GAMES TODAY… NEWS 5’S JESSICA BARRETO… WAS THERE AT HOLIDAY
ATHLETIC CENTER… SEEING ALL THESE ARROWS
FLY… AS ATHLETES WERE CHEERED ON BY EXCITED CROWDS… JESSICA? DEFINITELY A REALLY
ENERGETIC CROWD CHEERING THESE
WARRIORS ON AS THEY TOOK THEIR BOWS… AND SHOT FOR GOLD IN THEIR
DIFFERENT CATEGORIES… NOW WE ALL KNOW AIMING IS
AN IMPORTANT PART OF
SHOOTING… BUT… WHAT IF YOU COULDN’T SEE WHERE
YOU WERE AIMING? WELL I MET
ONE ATHLETE WHO PROVES… TRUST… AND TEAMWORK… IS ALL IT TAKES TO KEEP
YOUR EYE ON THE PRIZE… AS ARROWS FLEW… AND CROWDS CHEERED… BRETT CAMPFIELD… GOT READY TO DRAW HIS BOW… EXCEPT… BEING IN THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED
CATEGORY MEANS… HE MUST WEAR A BLINDFOLD TO
SHOOT… 05:51:02:22 – 06:01 “I’VE OUTRIGHT LOST MY RIGHT EYE
THEREFORE I’M IN THAT CATEGORY.”
BY FEELING THE BOW… HE KNOWS WHEN HE’S IN
POSITION… BUT TO SEE… HE RELIES ON HIS COACH… THERE TO TELL HIM EXACTLY WHAT
TO DO… 05:53:06:26 – :19:00
“WHAT MY COACH DOES IS ONCE I
FEEL THAT SCREW ON THE BACK OF
MY HAND AND I’M FULLY PULLED
BACK, THE COACH TELLS ME TO TILT
LEFT, TO TILT RIGHT AND RIGHT WHEN HE SAYS GOOD, I RELEASE
INSTANTLY.”
IT’S A BOND BUILT OUT OF
TRUST… AND MADE STRONGER THROUGH COMMUNICATION… 05:53:27:06 – 32:08
“IT WAS HIM AND I OUT THERE, IT
WASN’T JUST ME AND THAT FELT
REALLY REWARDING.” THIS YEAR… A NEW RULE… ALLOWING HIM TO COMPETE
ALONGSIDE THE REST OF THE
ATHLETES… 06:12:19:08 – :31:13
“OUR INTENT WAS TO INTEGRATE TO
ALLOW THEM TO FEEL THE ENTIRE
ATMOSPHERE AS IF THEY WERE JUST
A PART OF, JUST ANOTHER ATHLETE
AS OPPOSED TO BEING SEGREGATED IN ANY MANNER.”
EVEN THOUGH HE WALKED IN ONE
GOAL… 06:01:26:17 – :35:14
“MY BIG GOAL WAS DON’T MISS THE
TARGET.”
HE WALKED OUT… WITH THE GOLD… 06:01:38:29 – :42:23
“I DID BREAK THE RECORD FOR
VISUAL IMPAIRMENT ARCHERY.”
TODAY… CAMPFIELD WAS THE ONLY ATHLETE
IN HIS CATEGORY… AND WITH THE NEW RULES… THAT MEANS HIS SCORE… IS NOW THE FIRST OF ITS KIND… BUT HE STILL WORKED HARD TO SET
THE BAR HIGH… AND HOPES OTHERS WITH A VISUAL
DISABILITY… CAN SEE… THERE’S NOTHING STOPPING THEM
FROM BEING A PART OF THIS
SPORT… 06:03:46:10 – :50:26
“THAT RECORD’S GOING TO BE THERE
FOR SOMEBODY ELSE TO BACK AND
BEAT IT AND I HOPE THEY DO.”
ARCHERS IN THE INDIVIDUAL
COMPETITIONS WERE HONORED AT AN AWARDS CEREMONY THIS EVENING… WE HAVE PICTURES OF CAMPFIELD
GETTING THE GOLD MEDALON OUR
WEBSITE, KOAA-DOT-COM. ALWAYS WATCHING OUT FOR YOU,
COLORADO SPRINGS, JESSICA
BARRETO,
