The Karate Kid (1984) – Rowboat scene

Ah good. Stand bow. Not bow. Bow! Up! What, up front? Make block. Left, right. Up, down. Side, side. Breathe in, breathe out. And no scare fish. When do I learn how to punch? Better learn balance. Balance is key. Balance good, karate good. Everything good. Balance bad, better pack up, go home. Understand? Yeah, I understand. Did you ever get into fights when you were a kid? Plenty. Yeah, but it wasn’t like the problem I have, right? Why? Fighting, fighting. Same, same. Yeah, but you knew karate. Someone always know more. There were times when you were scared to fight? Always scared. Miyagi hate fighting. Yeah, but you like karate. So? So karate’s fighting, you train to fight. That what you think? No. Then why train? So I won’t have to fight. Miyagi have hope for you. When do I learn how to punch? Learn how punch? When learn how keep dry! No! Daniel-san, you’re all wet behind ear! Are you crazy? You’re crazy.

  1. Interesting. Just watched this on AMC and they edited out the "pack up" up part. I think it's because Pat Morita's accent made it sound like "Better fuck up on your own" And honestly, that's how I heard it as a kid.

  2. This is one of the most important lessons about balance. Something Cobra Kai lacks. Everyone needs a Sensei like Mr. Miyagi.

  3. "You train in karate so you don't have to fight"

-Is he saying that using a combat form like karate against someone isn't considered "fighting" event though they're in combat?
-or since they are really competent, the karate student will "destroy" the competition quickly and "fighting" is considered a long, drawn out situation?
-or that since he is training, he has nothing to prove and can just walk away?

I'm thinking all three are correct, I wonder what the writers were thinking.

  4. I have heard alot of people say Miyagi was a bad karate teacher but i have to disagree with that, you have to keep in mind that Miyagi was filling in all the roles of a male role model that Daniel never was able to get from his father he lost him at a young age. Miyagi taught Daniel things that help him later in life as well such as having good work ethic which made him successful financially, he also gave Daniel lessons in maintaining balance in his life which he struggles badly in but hopefully in Cobra Kai season 3 we can see the light of Miyagi shine through in the end.

  5. Mr. Miyagi was laughing his ass off. That shows he has a relatable, pranking, sense of humor, and knew how to have fun

  6. My favorite line from the movie my philosophy on why I chose to train to box. That way if I master fighting technique i'll never have to fight.
