The United States needed two Megan Rapinoe penalties, one of them controversial, to beat Spain 2-1 on Monday and set up a quarter-final clash with hosts France at the women’s World Cup A decision was made after Virginia Torrecilla brought down Rose Lavelle and the spot kick was awarded  The winning penalty was subject to much debate and lengthy review with the Video Assistant Referee Megan Rapinoe held her nerve late on to slot home another penalty to put USA ahead The no 15 smashed the ball into the bottom left corner to leave the goalkeeper helpless Rapinoe cut a focused figure and stepped up to smash the ball home and score again After a frenetic start to the tie, Jennifer Hermoso got Spain level with minutes of the opener But Rapinoe converted it with 15 minutes left after her opening penalty had been cancelled out by Jennifer Hermoso early in the first half Hermoso capitalised upon an embarrassing defensive error from Becky Sauerbrunn who was dispossed after receiving the ball from her goalkeeper  Rapinoe had held her nerve after just seven minutes in Reims to open the scoring from the penalty spot after Tobin Heath was brought down by Mapi Leon   Hermoso was mobbed by her team-mates after capitalising upon a defensive error to score Less than ten minutes had been played before Rapinoe opened the scoring with the first pen The purple-haired star peeled off in celebration after breaking the deadlock in ReimsAfter breezing through the group phase, holders the U S lacked inspiration and conceded their first goal of the tournament as Spain rose to the occasion in searing heat at the Stade Auguste-Delaune France, who the U.S. will meet in Paris on Friday for a place in the last four, scraped through the last 16 with a 2-1 win against Brazil after extra time on Sunday
