School Archery Competition

August 10, 2019

NORTHSIDE ATHLETIC COMPLEXT IN OCEAN CITY MARYLAND FOR THE NATIONAL ARCHERY IN SCHOOLS PROGRAM OCEAN CITY OPEN COMPETITION. NOW WE SPENT SOME TIME A FEW WEEKS AGO WITH THE HOLLY GROVE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL’S ARCHERY TEAM AS THEY PRACTICE FOR THIS EVENT. AND TODAY WE’RE GOING TO SEE HOW THAT PRACTICE PAID OFF. CLAPPING EVERYBODY SHOULD NOW HAVE THEIR BOW ON THE BOW RACK FOR INSPECTION. LIKE THE COACHES SAID, THIS’LL BE JUST LIKE PRACTICE– EXCEPT–THE RANGE IS WAY BIGGER, THEY’LL BE SHOOTING SIDE-BY-SIDE WITH THEIR COMPETITORS ON THE SAME TARGET, AND THERE’LL BE A COUPLE OF HUNDRED PEOPLE WATCHING. PIECE OF CAKE. COACH BRUCE BOWDEN EXPLAINS HOW THE MEET IS RUN. WELL THEY’RE ACTUALLY GONNA SHOOT 40 ARROWS, BUT 30 COUNT FOR SCORING, SO THEY GET 5 PRACTICE AT 10 AT 5 PRACTICE AT 15. THIS IS HOLLY GROVE’S FIRST EVER COMPETITION, AND TWO OF THE TEAMS HERE TODAY HAVE WON STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS AND HAVE GONE TO THE NATIONALS. THE TEAM IN THE BLUE SHIRTS IS FROM STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK. THE KEY IS TO TUNE OUT ALL THE NOISE AND DISTRACTIONS AND FOCUS ON FORM AND FOLLOW- THROUGH. A LOT OF ARROWS ARE GOING INTO THE YELLOW BULLSEYE, SO THESE ARCHERS ARE FINDING THEY HAVE THE RIGHT STUFF. MIDWAY THROUGH THE MEET, THE COACHES ARE FINALLY ABLE TO MANAGE A SMILE, AND THE TEAM IS IN GOOD SPIRITS. SO HOW HAVE YOU BEEN DOING SO FAR? BEEN DOING PRETTY GOOD I THINK. I’VE NOT GOTTEN ANY ZEROS YET WHICH IS GOOD. I THINK I DID GOOD. I MEAN, THEY ALL WENT ON THE TARGET WHICH IS AN IMPROVEMENT, BUT GOT EM ALL ON THERE SO. GETTING A FEW IN THE YELLOW? YEP, GOT A FEW IN THERE. 2 9S, 2 9S ALRIGHT. EACH ARCHER KEEPS THEIR OWN SCORE, WITH THE OTHER TEAM TO KEEP THEM HONEST. 9, 9, 10, 8. SO THERE WAS FUN AND EXCITEMENT FOR SURE, BUT WILL ANY OF THESE GLEAMING TROPHIES FIND A HOME IN WESTOVER? HERE’S THE ANSWER. THIRD PLACE TEAM TROPHY FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL, FIRST PLACE TEAM FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, AND INDIVIDUAL TROPHIES FOR IN ELEMENTARY BOYS TO THOMAS HAYNIE, FIRST PLACE AND TREVOR BOWDEN FOR THIRD PLACE, AND IN ELEMENTARY GIRLS, THIRD PLACE TO MACKENZIE BENNETT. WITH THEIR FIRST MEET UNDER THEIR BELTS, THEY’RE ALREADY THINKING ABOUT THE ROAD TO THE NATIONALS. GOOD LUCK! COMING UP NEXT, ON THIS
