In this video, you will learn about Sachin
Tendulkar who is an Indian cricket player and is considered one of the greatest batsmen
in the history of cricket. Sachin Tendulkar was born on 24 April 1973
in Bombay, India in a middle class family. His father was a writer and a professor, while
his mother used to work for a life insurance company. His father named him after his favourite music
director, Sachin Dev Burman. When he was a young boy he was a bully. His older brother Ajit Tendulkar, encouraged
him to play cricket in order to divert his attention from fights and got him enrolled
at the academy of the coach, Ramakant Achrekar. Tendulkar was not very good in studies but
he was good in sports. He was only 11 years old, when he was introduced
to the world of cricket. Tendulkar would practice for hours in the
nets. When Tendulkar used to become exhausted, his
coach Achrekar would put a one-rupee coin on the top of the stumps, and the bowler who
dismissed Tendulkar would get the coin. If Tendulkar passed the whole session without
getting dismissed, the coach would give him the coin. Tendulkar won 13 coins and considers them
to be his most prized possessions. When he was 15-year-old, he scored a century
in his domestic first-class debut for Bombay, making him the youngest player to do so. He made his international debut at the age
of 16 for India against Pakistan. In that match, he was hit on the face by a
bouncer from Waqar Younis, but declined to take the treatment and continued to play. Sachin Tendulkar holds the world record for
scoring highest number of runs and centuries in both the Test Cricket and the One Day Internationals. He has scored 15921 runs and 51 centuries
in Test Cricket. While in ODIs, he has scored 18,426 runs and
49 centuries. He was the first person to score a double
century in ODIs. He is the only cricketer so far to have played
in 200 Test matches. Tendulkar has taken 201 wickets across all
three formats of the international game. Tendulkar was sworn in as a Rajya Sabha member
at the Parliament House in New Delhi in June 2012. He retired from ODI competition in December
2012 and in November 2013 he called it quits from all formats of the game. Shortly after his final match, Tendulkar became
the youngest person and the first sportsman to be conferred with the Bharat Ratna, India’s
highest civilian honor. He is actively involved with Apnalaya, an
NGO, and sponsors 200 underprivileged children every year. He is married since 1995 to wife Anjali, a
former paediatrician. Tendulkar has two children, Arjun and Sara. He is also known as Little Master and Master
Blaster. In 2017 a film “Sachin: A Billion Dreams”
was released which is based on his life. This movie captures his cricket and personal
