>>WE’VE COME TO THE SEASONAL DOME HERE AT MITCHELL PARK CONSERVATORY IN MILWAUKEE. NOW I’M IN THE SHOW DOME. SPRING FLOWERS WILL SOON BE BLOOMING ACROSS WISCONSIN, AND IN JUST A FEW MINUTES, DEB WOLNIAK VISITS THE AMAZING GARDENS OF THE AMERICAN CLUB IN KOHLER, AND EMMY FINK GETS AN ARCHERY LESSON FROM WORLD-CLASS COMPETITIVE ARCHER LEXI KELLER. BUT FIRST, I’LL JOIN A GROUP OF DISABLED SHOOTERS FOR A PHEASANT HUNT AT SMITH’S PHEASANT CREST IN OXFORD. THIS WINTER, I JOINED A GROUP OF PHEASANT HUNTERS AT SMITH’S PHEASANT CREST NEAR OXFORD. THESE HUNTERS MAY NOT HAVE BEEN AS MOBILE AS MOST FOLKS, BUT THEY SURE HAD JUST AS MUCH FUN.>>>>WE DO THIS ONCE A YEAR. WE’VE GOT ANYWHERE’S FROM 16 TO 24 HUNTERS WE TAKE OUT.>>HEY MONICA. WHEN THE AMERICAN CLUB OPENED AS A RESORT HOTEL. OUR — WE WOULD GET MORE REQUESTS FOR INFORMATION ABOUT THE GARDENS, BUT SOMETIMES THE GARDENS WEREN’T STAFFED AT TIMES TO CONDUCT A TOUR, SO IN 2006, WE CREATED A VIRTUAL TOUR, WHERE AT ANY TIME, DAY OR NIGHT, OUR GUESTS CAN, WITH THE AID OF AN AUDIO TOUR WAND, TAKE A SELF-GUIDED TOUR ON THESE DEVICE S, ARE 3 — THREE SEPARATE GARDEN TOURS THAT WILL TAKE YOU AT YOUR OWN PACE THROUGHOUT THE GARDENS OF KOHLER. IT’S VERY POPULAR, IT’S SELF-PACED, AND PEOPLE LOVE IT.>>THE THREE SEPARATE SELF-GUIDED GARDEN TOURS ARE EXPLORING A GARDEN COMMUNITY, WHICH TAKES GUESTS THROUGH THE COURT YARDS OF THE AMERICAN CLUB, ALONG THE ART WALK, WHERE THE ARTS AND INDUSTRY PIECES ARE SHOWCASED, AND ENDING AT THE SHOPS AT WOOD LAKE. THEN THERE’S A MORE SPECIFIC TOUR WHICH IS THE ARTS AND INDUSTRY TOUR PROPER, WHICH FOR THOSE WHO ARE REALLY MORE INTERESTED IN THE ART PIECES, THAT TOUR EXPLAINS TO A GREATER DETAIL THE PIECES THEMSELVES WHILE AT THE SAME TIME, STILL GIVING INTERESTING INFORMATION ABOUT THE LANDSCAPING, AND LASTLY, THERE IS A MORE NATURALISTIC TOUR CALLED THE PRAIRIE ARBORETUM TOUR. IT TAKES YOU THROUGH NATURAL RESTORED TALL GRASS PRAIRIE, AT THE WOOD LAKE, AND THEN TAKES YOU THROUGH AN ARBORETUM SETTING, WHERE WE HAVE HUNDREDS OF DIFFERENT TREES AND YOU CAN LEARN ABOUT THE NATIVE TREES OF WISCONSIN AND CHARACTERISTICS AND IT ALSO CAN HELP SCHOOL GROUPS AND OTHER BOY SCOUT GROUPS AND SO FORTH LEARN PLANT IDENTIFICATION BY TAKING THAT TOUR AS WELL. WE REDO THE SCRIPT AS THE GARDENS CHANGE, SO THAT THEY ARE CURRENT, THEY ARE ACCURATE, AND AS WE CHANGE OUR GARDENS PERIODICALLY TO GIVE FRESH OFFERINGS TO OUR RETURN GUESTS, WE WANT THE AUDIO TOURS TO BE REFLECTIVE OF WHAT THEY’RE ACTUALLY SEEING IN THE GARDENS. AS WE WALK AROUND TODAY, YOU WILL NOTICE THERE ARE SOME VERY UNUSUAL PIECES OF ART, AND BEAUTIFUL PIECES. THEY WERE CREATED BY A PROGRAM OR WITHIN A PROGRAM KNOWN AS THE ARTS AND INDUSTRY PROGRAM. THAT IS A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT BETWEEN THE JOHN MICHAEL KOHLER ARTS CENTER AND THE MANUFACTURING ENTITIES OF KOHLER. ESSENTIALLY, IT’S A RESIDENCY AND WORKSHOP PROGRAM WHERE ARTISTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH THE MANUFACTURING PROCESSES OF KOHLER, ESSENTIALLY USING THE INDUSTRIAL MIGHT OF KOHLER TO HELP BRING THEIR VISION, THEIR ARTWORK TO LIFE. AND IN RETURN, WE CAN TAKE SOME OF THOSE WONDERFUL PIECES THAT THEY CREATE AND EXHIBIT THEM PERMANENTLY IN THE GARDENS. SO I HAVE THE GREATEST JOB IN THE WORLD. AND THE GREATEST STAFF AS WELL. WE HAVE SPECIALISTS WITHIN THE LANDSCAPE TEAM, WE HAVE CERTIFIED, TRAINED ARBORISTS, TURF SPECIALISTS, WE HAVE PROFESSIONALS IN ALL THE DISCIPLINES THAT ARE NECESSARY TO PERFORM THE WHOLE BREADTH OF SERVICES. I HAVE A DOZEN FULL-TIME STAFF THAT WORK YEAR-ROUND, PEOPLE OFTEN ASK WHAT WE DO IN THE WINTER MONTHS. WELL, THERE’S PLANNING FOR THE GARDENS, THERE’S PRUNING, THERE’S SNOW REMOVAL, AND WE ALSO HAVE THREE GREENHOUSES WHERE THE BEAUTIFUL PLANTS THAT YOU SEE AS WE TOUR OUR GARDENS ARE RAISED YEAR-ROUND. IN THE SUMMERTIME, WE COMPLEMENT OUR FULL-TIME STAFF WITH ADDITIONAL SEASONAL POSITIONS. AND IT’S A GREAT SUMMER JOB. I LIKE TO ENCOURAGE THOSE WHO HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED KOHLER BEFORE TO COME AND ENJOY THE GARDENS OF THE AMERICAN CLUB AND THE SURROUNDINGS. WHAT PEOPLE MAY NOT REALIZE IS WE ARE ACTUALLY A REGISTERED BOTANICAL GARDEN. SINCE 2004, THE AMERICAN PUBLIC GARDENS ASSOCIATION HAS RECOGNIZED THE VILLAGE OF KOHLER PROPER AS A BOTANICAL GARDEN. IF YOU HAVE A PASSION FOR GARDENING, AS MANY OF US DO, YOU CAN LEARN ABOUT THE PLANTS, YOU CAN LEARN FROM OUR PROFESSIONAL STAFF, WHETHER IT’S GUIDED TOURS OR THE SELF-GUIDED TOURS, OR FROM OUR CONSIERGS, WE WOULD LOVE TO INSPIRE PEOPLE WITH A PASSION FOR GARDENING.>>BE SURE TO SCHEDULE A VISIT TO THE KOHLER GARDENS AND TO THE FLORAL SHOW DOME HERE AT MITCHELL PARK FOR THE FANTASTIC SPRING SHOW.
