John Florence dominates Vans World Cup of Surfing

October 10, 2019

Sunset Beach, Hawaii is synonymous with surfing. A sport that kelly Slater has dominated for
20 years. But the 11 time world champion didn’t have
it all his own way during the first heats of the Vans World Cup of Surfing. Slater scored 17.04 points. 20-year-old John John Florence is half the
age of Slater but he definitely matches the veteran when it comes to quality. The defending champion signalled his intent
with a score of 17.8 points. “I’m just going to stick to having fun you
know. I had fun at Haleiwa (Reef Hawaiin Pro) and got a lot of confidence there and coming
here, had fun here and have a lot confidence going into the next heat.” France’s Jeremy Flores made it safely through
– winning his heat with a score of 14.33 points. Only half of the 16 Australians in competition
survived – amongst them Jay Thompson. South Africa’s Jordy Smith did enough to book
his place in the last 32. But it is Florence who has attracted the attention
in Hawaii again, twelve months after becoming the youngest winner of this prestigious competition.
