Greta Thunberg’s emotional speech to EU leaders

February 1, 2020

I want you to act as if
the House was on fire. I have said those words before
a lot of people have explained why that is a bad idea. A great number of politicians
have told me that panic never leads to anything good
and I agree. To panic, unless you have to,
is a terrible idea. But when your house is on fire
and you want to keep your house from burning to the ground,
then that does require some level of panic. We are in the midst of
the sixth mass extinction and the extinction rate
is up to 10,000 times faster than what is considered normal,
with up to 200 species becoming extinct
every single day. Erosion of fertile topsoil,
deforestation of our great forests, toxic air pollution,
loss of insects and wildlife, the acidification of our oceans. These are all disastrous trends
being accelerated by a way of life that we can
in our financially fortunate part of the world see as
our right to simply carry on. [Applause] Our house is falling apart
and our leaders need to start acting accordingly because
at the moment they are not. If our house was falling apart
our leaders wouldn’t go on like you do today. You would change almost
every part of your behaviour as you do in an emergency. If our house was falling apart,
you wouldn’t hold three emergency Brexit summits
and no emergency summit regarding the breakdown
of the climate and the environment. [Applause] The EU elections are
coming up soon. And many of us who will be
affected the most by this crisis – people like me –
are not allowed to vote. Nor are we in a position to shape
the decisions of business, politics, engineering, media,
education or science because the time it takes for us
to educate ourselves to do that simply does no longer exist. And that is why millions
of children are taking to the streets, school-striking for the climate
to create attention for the climate crisis. You need to listen to us,
we who cannot vote. You need to vote for us,
for your children and grandchildren. What we are doing now can soon
no longer be undone. In this election you vote for the
future living conditions for humankind. And though the politics needed
do not exist today, some alternatives are certainly
less worse than others. And I have read that some parties
do not even want me standing here today because they so
desperately do not want to talk about climate breakdown.
[Applause] To do your best is no longer
good enough. We must all do
the seemingly impossible. And it’s OK if you refuse
to listen to me. I am, after all, just a 16-year-old
schoolgirl from Sweden. But you cannot ignore the scientists
or the science or the millions of school-striking children
who are school-striking for a right to a future. I beg you:
please do not fail on this. [Applause]

  1. Forget Brexit and focus on climate change, Greta Thunberg tells EU ► https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/apr/16/greta-thunberg-urges-eu-leaders-wake-up-climate-change-school-strike-movement

  3. I'm glad she gave up, stupid adults using this mentally challenged girl(who use her disability like super powers as she said). we're all going to die in years ago wait I mean in 5 yrs, oops my bad next 12yrs. prepare your selfies.

  4. I feel bad for this little being blinded by greedy parents she's traveling the world with a yatch that uses diesel engines. I would love to belive that this girl is speaking with her heart but the people around her are not.

  5. I actually have no words. I’m so glad that someone like her is the one fighting for humanity when nobody else will. ❤️❤️

  6. Ok so can someone go onto the BBC thing with Putin talking about her and talk some sense into the old white guys in the comments-

  7. this is how life works in order for our species to advance there must be damage to our planet its what happens when there is over 7 billion people but if we stop using resources we stop adavancing what we should be doing is colonizing other planets then it dose not matter how much we use because we simply move to the next planet

  8. Y'all know she didn't write this speech right,..She is reading someone else's dialogue and got 100% credit for it.

  9. Underage children isnt supposed to give adults advice.According to dr phil your brain develops till you are 28.Its irresponsible to give person at that age platform for any political reason.

  10. For 2020 new activist movements will FIGHT for:
    Weather change
    Season change
    Year change
    Month change
    Time change
    Day change
    Age change
    Change change 🤣

  11. I reckon is great for the humanity what she’s trying to say, but behind all the talks she s just an extremely anxious child who’s been abused and looks depressed. Try to explain all that to children in Africa.

  12. GRETUS CRETINUS AMARGATUS in search of money and in all luxury … MKULTRA manipulative at the service of the world elite and bad politics, instead of real solutions is dedicated to curling and twitching with lies & stupidities.

  13. As long as the world wants cars and flights, smartphones and tv’s, fridges and cheeseburgers, nothing will stop. The poorest parts of the world look at the western lifestyle in awe and aim for all these goodies as part of everyday life – this existence that will drive us into the ground.

All that will stop this is the actual ‘by way of force’ destructive changes that ceases the production of such products and the lifestyle and directly threaten human life.

  14. 200 species going extinct every day? Extinction ratio 10,000x faster? Almost everything would be dead. Sure, climate change exists. But you're one of the people who thinks that the world is going to end in 12 years. It's not. The world is going into a tropical phase. The few species that are going extinct, are the species that wouldn't survive. Polar bears, penguins, they all just wouldn't survive. Sure, there are animals that are going extinct for other reasons, but that is a rare few and they are an example of Darwin's natural selection. Climate change isnt that bad, you just want something to whine about.

  15. It’s interesting to me that in order to fix climate change

she’s not even acknowledging the need for a period of negative population growth followed by a significant prolonged period of zero population growth

The issue is there are too many people on the planet

  16. Its sad. It takes one of the people not allowed to vote, the young people, to tell the older and experienced adults this. Greta has my respect, and I am glad she is sharing her concerns, and others concerns with the world.

  17. She's such an angel, so brave, and such a sweetheart. I wish world leaders actually listened and took action. Greta has such a bright pure soul and she deserves all the love and support we can give her. Change and better times will surely come as long as we don't stop trying.

  18. Its all lifestyle. We'r all contributing. Going Vegan (or eating meat just once a week like most generations) and not flying in planes as often as possible are the easiest ways to fix it and do our part, Between those two industries, it would help us hit all the targets we needs without rushing too fast to get off oil. Vegan diets means loads of free land to feed more mouths and grow hemp to replace oil as the bio side of the economy, would slow deforestation and free up all the fresh water we need. Lifestyle is the problem. And those with the best lifestyles don't want to make sacrifices… Their the kind of people who go on about global population despite the birth rate being stabilised for over a decade. What their usually trying to say is "there are too many people with less and they should "go", their consumption is the problem"…

  19. blah blah blah what a bunch of nonsense, enough with this smiggle thunberg!!! The only problem its overpopulation, if you fly over any european country and look from above there is no wilderness (including wildlife) anymore, but only agricultural landscape, check it on google maps as well. The balance of life on earth its severely damaged. Humans became cancer to this earth even the so called self aware vegans are part of it on the same level if not worse! World population in 1970 was 3,7 billion vs 2020 with 7,5 billion just in 50 years the population doubled in size, if this fact is not scary enough I don't know what is. It is not global warming its global OVERPOPULATION!!!!! every life feeds on another life but that is not the problem the problem occurs when the balance is disrupted. Everybody is being sympathetic on saving people, wildlife and nature but nobody wants to swallow the fact that you cant save people together with wildlife and nature. In order something to live something else has to die, you want to save 7,5 billion people then be prepared to kill nature and wildlife. We people have cancerous behavior PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. 0:39 We are indeed in a massive extinction … of White people! Sadly, that's not the topic of discussion, pseudo-science is.

  21. If you are in charge of the world would you invest all into green energy or would you invest all into people since the death of the ocean means over 3 billion people will lose their main food source.

  22. So because she's a young girl everything she says is inspirational? It's so easy to stand there and criticize the world for not doing enough, anybody can do that. Now if you actually go and do something about it and succeed, that would be heroic. What is crying and pointing the finger at people going to achieve?

  23. I’m going to leave my big Range Rover ticking over on the driveway while I’m in bed tonight. That’s what I think about climate change Greta

  24. I got so emotional, I now feel the urge to drive 20 miles in my diesel to buy a burger and a coke… what the heck… make it a 6 pack.
