–Hanasakigawa Girls Academy: Archery Range– Sayo: Well then, shall we start? Rinko: I-…I’m sorry…for doing this…when it’s your day off from the club… Sayo: Not at all. When I asked the club advisor about it, they gladly unlocked the place for us, so don’t worry about it. Rinko: …Thank you so much. Sayo: So, I’ll teach you about the basics of archery first. I’ll tell you more specifically about what all the equipment is called and everything another time. Rinko: O-..Okay… Sayo: First things first, to clear up any misunderstandings, archery isn’t just a competition about hitting a target. First and foremost, it’s a martial art. It’s initial purpose was to train both the mind and body. You train your mind by continuously firing arrows one after the other. That mindset is an essential part of archery. Rinko: I think…I understand…but… Sayo: Well, it might be a pretty unfamiliar way of thinking for most people. Let’s see…Shirokane-san, have you ever heard of the phrase “A true shot hits the mark”? Rinko: N-No… Sayo: “A true shot hits the mark” means that if an arrow is fired correctly, it will hit its target without fail. In other words, “hitting the target” is ultimately only dependent on whether you “fire the arrow correctly”. Rinko: …So the main focus…is not to hit the target…but to fire the arrow correctly…right? Sayo: Exactly. Um, would you like to try firing some arrows today? In this case, I think trying it out for yourself really is the best way to experience it. Rinko: Eh…Um………O-…Okay… Sayo: In that case, I’ll show you how to fire an arrow first. Keep in mind what I said earlier as you watch me. Rinko: Okay…I will… (…Seeing Hikawa-san holding up an arrow like that… She looks…so dignified and cool…) Sayo: …… Rinko: …! You hit the bullseye…a-amazing. Sayo: Thank you very much. Now, let’s move onto your practice. –15 minutes later– Rinko: Y-…You need to be…pretty strong to pull the arrow back. Sayo: That bow you’re using is still one of the weaker ones…is it still difficult to use? Rinko: …N-No…I think I can do it…with one like this… Sayo: I’m glad. Then, try pulling the arrow back slowly just like I showed you earlier Rinko: (Begin with moving…my left foot towards the target by half a step…then…) (Adjust my posture…and the bow by about the same amount…Set the arrow…and fire…) (M-…My arm’s…shaking…) ………… Sayo: To be able to pull the arrow back so cleanly for your first time… Though unfortunately, you missed the target. Let’s try once more, but this time, try lowering the arrow a little bit once it’s in place. Rinko: …Lower it…? …Okay. (Just like before…but a bit lower…) …… Sayo: It’s still not reaching the target…is her bow arm too lax…? Shirokane-san, don’t worry too much about it. It really is quite difficult to hit the target as a beginner… Rinko: ……Once more… Sayo: Eh? Rinko: Once more…no…at-…at least…until I hit the target…please let me continue… Sayo: Shirokane-san.. …Okay. I’ll stay here with you until you’re satisfied with your progress. –30 minutes later– Rinko: I-…I can’t…hit it at all… Sayo: The next is your 10th shot. You’ve fired quite a few, but it’s still a bit far for you… Rinko: ……Once more………ah Sayo: Shirokane-san!? Are you okay? -That cut on the joint of your thumb… The thumb joint where the arrow string rests is called the yamakura and is quite a common place for beginners to get a wound. If I’d explained how to do this properly, we could have prevented it…I’m sorry. Let’s stop doing this for now. If we continue like this, it will hinder our band activities. Rinko: No…I’m okay… Sayo: But… Rinko: I want to keep going…until I hit the target. I’m sorry, but…please let me continue.
