November 4, 2019

A significant match, no matter what the score. Carlos Alberto and former stars of Brazilian
team Flamengo touch down in Libya to face a team made up of former stars of the national
team in an exhibition game. The match held as part of celebrations of
the second anniversary of the revolution that toppled Muammar Gaddafi. This is the second visit by Flamengo to Libya. The same stars from both sides met 27 years
ago when the hosts won 2- 0 in the same stadium in Tripoli in 1985. The troubled nation is bidding to host the
2017 African Cup of Nations and is keen to prove the country’s stable and able to organise
tournaments. Libya was initially given the 2013 African
Cup of Nations, but it was moved to South Africa for security reasons. Former national star Lotfi Mohamed Gremil
says the match sends the message to the whole world is that Libya is safe: “This is a friendly between Libya and Brazil.
I hope that the two countries will continue to co-operate in the field of football. The
message that we want to send to the whole world is that Libya is safe. You can see by
yourself here – fans are attending and our country is OK. (between the two countries).” The small but noisy crowd enjoyed the match
which was won 2- 1 by the visitors. After neither side was able to score in the
first half the visitors took the lead through Carlos Alberto who added the second from a
penalty kick few minutes later. Waleed El-Shibly had a consolation goal for
the hosts.
