“l’Energie autrement” and Barnabé present melt brass (zinc copper alloy) hello everyone, DIY friends special day, today is… a challenge some students asked me “can we melt brass easily ?” some explanations so this is the furnace it’s heavy because it’s full of clay we have noticed if we want melt brass we need a lot of oxygen, a lot of air so we added a big fan, this is a 5 watt fan. I have 4 little ceramic pieces a bit of coal unto it and it will be ok for the crucible. We start with charcoal. Some coal burn warmer but I this it’s more about the air entrance, I think. ok, easy… did you have a good journey? -Yes thanks You’re from Grenoble, right? Yes, right next. The place where there is pollution. I’ll let you introduce yourself Ok, my name is Camille i work at Alpinum events and we are the organizers of the only biathlon amateur race
in France so anyone can try to compete in the biathlon during this event. The biathlon, the famous sport combining cross-country skiing, and riffle shooting Martin Fourcade’s sport… and so we have a lot of cartridge cases. We gather all the used cases. and we don’t how to use them for recycling, we want to find a way. – It’s a waste for you ? Exactly. It’s a waste for us. Therefore, I had an idea- WE got the idea to make a 3D medal model I modelised it and printed it in 3D. -Show it well. And I asked Adrien and Théo “how can we reuse those cases and craft them into a medal ?” Usually, the cases it is not reused. So we wondered how to recycle the cases into something useful That’s a nice project. This bullet is intact, we cannot use it. We have to sort it out. How many medals do you need? 21 medals, today? that’s a huge challenge. It is going to end by nightfall… we’ll see. I hope we can craft at least a few. Here we go! I have bought the crucible for approximately 25€ it is made of clay – graphite It is used to smelt bronze, up to 1300°C It is not brand new but in good shape. We’ll put the cases in it. There we go. That should do it. to prevent that the zinc of the brass doesn’t gasify or evaporate and we lose it, I will cover it with charcoal and like that it should be better That’s how they go together, so the first one I put it upside down and I move it a little bit so that the molten liquid flow then we put some talc and a little bit of sand that I sieve in a first time and that’s it! Ah! It’s very heavy! I stir a little bit and at the bottom there is a kind of mass very nice but very hot very hard for sure there is nothing liquid at the bottom so maybe it’s not hot enough and we will have to put some more charcoal to raise the temperature man ! the heat of this thing ! very very hot we see it well here ok ready ? ah… I don’t know if it’s hot enough I do not feel that it’s molten enough still got some liquid brass so let’s make other ones ah so it went even to there so … almost… there again and there again it does not seem to work this one a bit more here not much and here not much again zero out of five so we will mix wood charcoal with coke (fuel) the sad thing is the smoke it makes so this is made out with oil but that’s what blacksmithes used to use to get to high temperatures and here we go ! nothing but natural there …
– My pleasure guys ! so then, enjoy your competition, how is called again ? Alpinum Impulse Tour – and when is it ?
– Next saturday, 24th february – and where ?
– In Haute-Savoie (french eastern mountainy region) Ok that’s noted, dunno if the video will be up before but super ! super guys, so see you soon ! Thank you !!!!
