Hey guys! What’s up with you? Dorothea here again You guys liked my last video talking about the “th” pronunciation in English? Really annoying I know, but today I have another annoying sound in English to practice I got a comment, someone asked me to make this video, so Let’s do it, let’s talk! This sound is “RL” First I want tell you guys something very personal from my life I was thinking, “do I really want to share this video?” I don’t know it will be on the internet forever…so embarrassing No but I don’t have a problem. you guys know. I don’t have a problem to share things from my life It is a little scary But it’s all good. I want to show a video of myself, from my childhood When I was 5 years old Don’t pay attention to my haircut, it was horrible, my dad cut it But I want to show you guys that it isn’t only Brazilians who have problems with this sound Or I should say, it isn’t just foreigners, people who are not native English speakers because even Americans, British, native English speakers Have problems with the english language, even me! When I was a child I had a speech impediment And it was with this sound exactly, “RL” Now it is fine, I can say it just fine But I needed speech therapy to train my tongue This video that I am going to show you is after I did some therapy and you will see that I am talking, I am getting it but up until then it wasn’t perfect. Unfortunately I don’t have a lot of childhood videos of me This clip that I am going to show you is everything, basically everything that I have. If I had more, I would show more but I don’t Because, since I’m the youngest in my family I think my parents were tired of having to film and take photos of everyone in their childhood Because my brother, the oldest, he has a lot of photos of every milestone but me no. It is always the youngest that suffers with this, no? But I am going to show you to give you an idea as to how hard it really is even for Americans to pronounce these words correctly So, let’s go. Let’s practice some words that will appear on the screen and I will talk really slow I will get even closer to you guys here so that you can see my mouth Snarl, that’s a hard one. What does it mean? It is that expression This was the most challenging word for me when I was a kid It is really hard because your tongue goes on top, below it turns around like this It is very strange. Look, With this “L” the tongue doesn’t really go outside of the mouth like it does with “th” It is really close to coming out of the mouth, but it doesn’t It is touching the inner side of the upper teeth What is “twirl” in portuguese? And also, very close to this sound “RL” I also wanted to talk about this …you guys are going to hate me because now we are going to combine the “RL” sound with “TH” Yes! There are some really difficult words in English that have both of these sounds. Let’s do it. And finally, to end this video the word that I didn’t say correct at all in this video I showed you of me which was, laundry I think I said, “ladrey” You can learn, it is only a question of practice you have to practice practice practice and you will get it I promise you. Ok you guys I hope you liked this video Please give it a like, follow me on Instagram @dorothea__v And I will see you in my next video. Bye, kisses!
