Canada’s women’s sledge hockey team fighting for Paralympic recognition

November 16, 2019

I mean, you grow up with a disability and
you don’t really know that that’s an option and seeing the men participate in
the Paralympics it’s like that, that is the ultimate dream.
I want to get our sport there too. We’re not an IPC medal event, so at the
Paralympic Games right now, there isn’t a medal to be won
in women’s sledge hockey. You need more teams for it to be an IPC event and you need to be an IPC event for there to want to be teams. Other countries are in the same boat, where
they’re not wanting to fund a team, because there isn’t a medal and there
isn’t a medal because there’s not enough teams. I think in the last two years I’ve met, two-dozen
young little girls that know about our team now and they’re excited and they’re ready
to get on the ice and train and they come out to our
development camps and there’s definitely a future for this team, like absolutely. I just feel like we’re getting so close. I know it’s not gonna be 2018, but I
think that with the momentum we’re gaining and the progress we’re making, we’re gonna be there
a lot sooner than I think everyone thinks.
