Brandon Bates Harvests Great Montana Archery Bull – Redemption

August 13, 2019

(shale rocks shifting under weight) (percussion music with humming) Archery hunting is really, really hard. I’ve said that all along
and I say it all the time. We just forget how
difficult it is to connect and it gets even harder whenever
you get inside your head, that maybe you’re just
not very good at it. (acoustic guitar) (elk call) (boots shuffling through grass) Okay, let’s go around front. You see, they’re gonna come up right here or he’s gonna skirt right here. Now he could disappear really quick. There he is right there. (elk calling) I always feel like during
the course of a week I’m gonna get one solid opportunity. But I don’t feel like
it gets more than that. If you mess up one
really good opportunity, that might have been your shot. (dramatic music) And it probably was your shot. (elk calling) (television static) (lively music) (kazoo humming) (fake elk call) This is the only archery hunt
that I’m doing this year. And I’m not trophy hunting. Meat is of the utmost
importance and a super priority, that’s kind of mission number one. Mission number two may
be more important to me than it is to everyone else. It’s to actually not have
to eat a Montana archery tag for the, I dunno, 10th year? Hopefully that is going
to change this week. (television static) (elk calling out) (light bass music) (elk calling) (dramatic heartbeat) (bow snaps) (relaxing drumbeat) Had him at 44 and then he took a step up. I had him on my 40-yard pan, I knew he was right there. That’s the opportunity
that I’m talking about. You think you’re gonna get one,
you get it, and you blow it. (mumbling) Montana has absolutely kicked my butt, there’s just no question about it. (bow snaps) There’s probably nobody that likes to be more aggressive than I do. I don’t want to be stupid aggressive. It’s one thing to get testy with the wind, it’s another thing to
get testy with the wind when you can’t see. One of the big fears
that I had coming here was the weather. I just know how crazy the
weather can be in this part of Montana and it can get really sketchy. Don’t move, don’t move, don’t move. You’ve gotta be kidding me. (Mid-West acoustic guitar) And that’s what really is the challenge is just having the patience to wait for the right moment and the right setup. – That’s what they do, they’ll go lay out in that flat where those cows are. They just lay out there,
they’ll do it all day. – Now I think the thing this week about being here is, I just got in my head a little bit and created
this curse that isn’t really there. I’m not after a big bull,
I just wanna connect. (four by four engine humming) – This little spot right here, they don’t hardly bed in it at all but it’s a big corridor, you know, they kinda come through
it and back here is a huge bedding area. You’ll see a lot of
elk just funnel through that thing in the evening. – It just felt like a
really really good area to be in and we had the wind in our favor and we weren’t there long and there was a bull we spotted that was
bedded down on a bench. (dramatic music) It doesn’t make it – I’m trying to decide on what to do – it doesn’t
make a ton of sense. – See that timber above
that bush right there? – Yeah. – If we could get to that point, I mean I could go back there with ya, you could get to that
point and you could – – Oh no, there’s the bull right there. There’s the bull right there. There’s the bull. Right there. – I see him. Holy smokes he’s close. – I can’t see him. Sometimes you just have to make a decision and it may be the wrong one, but you have to make a decision. (dramatic music) (quietly rustling through grass) (crickets humming) (elk call) (elk call) (elk call) (elk call) (quiet dramatic music) (bow snaps) (heavy breathing) – Go down right there. Go down right there. (heavy exhale) – You’ve gotta be kidding me. You’ve gotta be kidding me. You seen that? How did that happen? We have elk meat in the freezer. Perfect double long. Golly. (Sigh) Man, that’s so cool. Yeah, we got super, super, super lucky. ♪ The highest fall it won’t break me ♪ ♪ The blood and sweat is what made me ♪ ♪ Made me ♪ – I couldn’t be happier with the bull that I was able to take. (Upbeat music) Just a solid, classic,
Montana six point bull. Double long shot, messed
up absolutely no meat. That’s how it’s supposed to
go right there, every time. Just couldn’t be more perfect. The bull just died instantly, basically. He was done in a matter of seconds. ♪ You say it’s taking too long ♪ ♪ I’m taking that as a sign ♪ ♪ It’s not a matter of faith ♪ ♪ Just a matter of time ♪ When it happens that fast,

  1. I feel that curse…. Been three different years, with three different missed opportunities. Year 4 here I come to rip you apart!

  2. Seemed like they were trying to avoid capturing the shot on camera? Scared they will offend some people I guess?

  3. lol “You seen that”

Camera guy I imagine shaking head with a big “nope missed it”

Good bull impressive shot sitting down.

  4. Awesome video and footage fellas! Waiting on a first Montana archery elk hunt draw as we speak! Question: What Sitka gear was the hunter wearing? Trying to figure out the gear I need for early September archery elk.

  5. That shot was really impressive in my mind. The whole draw cycle and fire in less then 3 seconds in a awkward position, very nice whatever your doing to practice it’s paid off.

  6. Congrats Brandon, Glad to see you didnt have another bowl of tag soup. What release is that you're using?
