Jerome Boateng returned from injury as Germany beat Saudi Arabia 2-1 1 in their final friendly before the World Cup. The centre-back partnered Bayern teammate Mats Hummels for the first half. I thought he looked good physically after his injury absence so I’m sure in 10 days, or when it kicks off in eight days, he’ll be fully fit. Like Boateng, Bayern and Germany captain Manuel Neuer also played the first 45 minutes before being substituted at half-time with the score 2-0. I felt just as good as I did in Austria. I think I’ve had two good warm-up matches and I’ve done all right. A total of six Bayern players were involved, with Niklas Süle, Thomas Müller and Joshua Kimmich also featuring in a warm-up game that didn’t go entirely smoothly for Joachim Löw’s side. First of all we had a few chances which we didn’t make the most of. Then in the second half, I think we looked a bit tired. Off the ball we stopped going to the limit, we lost the ball a few times and invited them to come at us. There’s always a similar pattern with Germany friendlies before tournaments so we’re optimistic that we can raise our game again. Meanwhile, Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski scored in Poland’s World Cup warm-up against Chile, who were cheered on from the sidelines by the injured Arturo Vidal. As they did last season, Bayern will again be aiming for the final of the DFB Cup in Berlin next year. New coach Niko Kovac and his side will start their 2018/19 campaign with a trip to Lower Saxony Cup winners SV Drochtersen/Assel of the regional league, following Friday night’s draw. The first-round ties will be played between 17 and 20 August. For Bayern’s under-17s, a final is already in sight. Holger Seitz’s side travel to face RB Leipzig in the second leg of their German championship semi-final on Sunday. And with a 3-0 advantage from the first leg, the Bayern youngsters are well placed to make the final on June 17th. There were some very special visitors to Säbener Straße on Friday. Iconic British heavy metal band Iron Maiden took up the club’s invitation invitation ahead of their concert in Munich this weekend, swapping their guitars for football boots at the record champions’ training facility.
