Bear Hunting (Wisconsin Do It Yourself)

August 12, 2019

(INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>AS THE POPULATION OF BLACK BEAR HAS INCREASED HERE IN WISCONSIN, WE’RE SEEING SUCCESSFUL HARVEST RATES UP OVER 70% IN SOME ZONES. THERE’S MORE PEOPLE DRAWING TAGS EACH YEAR. NOW IS A GREAT TIME TO GET OUT IN WISCONSIN AND HUNT THESE BLACK BEAR. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC) (MOOSE BUGLING) (TURKEY CALL AND GOBBLE) (GUNSHOT) (DUCK CALL) (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>”PASSION FOR THE HUNT” ISBROUGHT TO YOU BY ARCTIC SHIELD,SCHEELS, MATHEWS ARCHERY,DAKOTA DECOY,FEDERAL PREMIUM AMMUNITION,LUCKY DUCK PREMIUM DECOYS,CRESTLINER BOATS,QUICK-SET BY CLAM,AND POLAR TRAILERS.>>WELCOME TO WISCONSIN BEAR SEASON. I’M JUST GETTING READY TO GO OUT AND CHECK THE BAITS FOR THE FIRST TIME HERE. IT’S THE LAST WEEK OF JUNE HERE AND THE BAITS HAVE BEEN OUT FOR ABOUT THREE WEEKS. I KNOW IT’S EARLY, BUT I AM BAITING ABOUT A MILLION ACRES OF PUBLIC LAND, SO I JUST WANTED TO GET AN INVENTORY OF THE BEARS THAT WERE THERE. SO I’M GONNA GET THE BAIT ALL PACKED UP HERE AND WE’LL HEAD OUT AND CHECK ‘EM.>>THERE’S TWO PRIMARY METHODS THAT ARE USED IN THE STATE. ONE IS HUNTING OVER BAIT AND THE OTHER IS HUNTING WITH THE AID OF DOGS. YOU CAN USE NATURAL GRAINS, NATURALLY APPEARING FOODS, AND ANYTHING THAT DOESN’T CONTAIN ANIMAL PRODUCTS. BUT WITH THIS BEING WISCONSIN, THE ONE EXCEPTION TO THAT RULE IS CHEESE. YOU CAN USE CHEESE, BUT YOU CAN’T USE MEAT OR ANIMAL FAT OR ANYTHING IN THAT NATURE. SO, POPULAR BAITS WOULD BE GRAINS, GRANOLA, PASTRIES, THINGS OF THAT NATURE. AND IN ORDER TO LEGALLY BAIT, YOU IDENTIFY A LOCATION, YOU ARE LIMITED TO TEN GALLONS OF BAIT AT ANY ONE TIME IN THAT LOCATION, AND IT NEEDS TO BE CONTAINED IN A NATURALLY OCCURRING THING, WHETHER THAT’S A HOLE IN THE GROUND OR VERY POPULAR IS THE USE OF A HOLLOWED OUT LOG OR HOLLOWED OUT STUMP. THAT BAIT NEEDS TO BE PROTECTED WITH EITHER A LARGE ROCK OR SOMETHING TO CAP IT TO MAKE INACCESSIBLE TO DEER UNTIL THE POINT AT WHICH THE BEAR HAS REMOVED THAT AND CONSUMED THE BAIT. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>IT IS EARLY IN THE YEAR. I JUST WANNA GET AN INVENTORY AND SEE WHAT’S OUT THERE AND MAKE SURE THAT THEY KNOW THAT THE BAIT IS THERE SO THAT WHEN SEASON ROLLS AROUND IN EARLY SEPTEMBER, HOPEFULLY WE CAN GET ONE DOWN REAL QUICK. BECAUSE AS SOON AS THOSE ACORNS FALL, YOU KNOW, LATE SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER, THE BEARS AROUND HERE, THEY KIND OF JUST SHUT OFF. ALL THEY DO IS GORGE ON ACORNS AND IT’S KIND OF TOUGH TO GET ‘EM IN TO THE BAIT THEN. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC) (MOSQUITOS BUZZING)>>LOOKS GOOD. IT GOT HIT, LOG’S DOWN THERE. I HAD THIS LOG OVER IT, SO GOOD SIZE BEAR PROBABLY CAME IN AND TORE IT UP AND ATE THE DONUTS. I’M GONNA KEEP IT SHORT; THE MOSQUITOS ARE REALLY BAD. BUT I’M GONNA PUT ON GLOVES TO MINIMIZE MY SCENT AROUND HERE, GET IT BAITED UP AND GET OUT OF HERE.>>THE ESTIMATED BEAR DENSITY IN THREE OF OUR FOUR ZONES IS RIGHT AROUND ONE BEAR PER SQUARE MILE. THAT WOULD BE IN UNITS A, B, AND C. AND IN UNIT D, WHICH IS IN THE NORTHWEST PART OF THE STATE, THE DENSITY ESTIMATES THERE ARE AROUND 1.7 BEAR PER SQUARE MILE. IT REALLY IS A GREAT PLACE TO HUNT IF YOU’RE INTERESTED IN BEAR HUNTING. WE HAVE HIGH HARVEST LEVELS, WE HAVE VERY HIGH SUCCESS RATES, AND WE HAVE A LOT OF BEARS IN THE WOODS.>>WELL, AFTER LOOKING AT TRAIL CAMERA PICTURES, PRETTY EXCITED. I GOT TWO BEARS HITTING MY ONE BAIT. IT’S JULY 11TH, SO WE STILL GOT OH, ABOUT TWO MONTHS. SO I JUST GOTTA KEEP THE BEARS HITTING THE BAITS AND KEEP DOING WHAT I’M DOING AND HOPEFULLY THEY DON’T GET SICK OF THE DONUTS.>>HI, I’M ERIC HUSEBOE FROM TROPHY ADVENTURES BEAR BAIT. WE’RE OUTSIDE OF RURAL ETTRICK HERE IN MIDWEST WISCONSIN. WE’RE GONNA MIX UP A BARREL OF BAIT WITH A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT INGREDIENTS, CREATE SOME GREAT VARIETY. A BEAR CAN GET SICK OF ONE ITEM, SO I LIKE TO THROW A BUNCH OF VARIETY TO ‘EM. SO I’M GONNA START WITH A DRY GRANOLA, KIND OF A FILLER AS MUCH AS ANYTHING. NOT WHAT I WOULD CALL A GRADE-A BAIT, FOR SURE. IT’S MORE OF A SUBSTANCE, I GUESS. YOUR MASHED POTATOES WITH YOUR T-BONE STEAK. NEXT THING I’M GONNA PUT IN, ALMONDS. ALMONDS ARE THE STAPLE IN MY BAITS FOR NUTRITIONAL VALUE WITH THE FAT PROTEIN CONTENT IN ‘EM, SO I’M GONNA MIX THESE GUYS IN.>>USUALLY, THESE ITEMS SELL INDIVIDUALLY. YOU COULD EITHER BUY IT IN CASE FORM, SMALL, YOU KNOW, 15 TO 50 POUND CASES. WE SELL THEM IN 55 GALLON BARRELS AS WELL AS BULK TOTES, WHICH TYPICALLY WEIGH ANYWHERE FROM THAT 900 TO 2,000 POUNDS. WE’RE LOOKING AT GETTING THESE BAITS STARTED. THESE ARE CIRCUS PEANUTS. BASICALLY STRAIGHT SUGAR. THAT’S ABOUT ALL THEY ARE. A LOT OF SUGAR IN THESE AND SUGARS ARE KIND OF A BEAR’S ACHILLES’ HEEL. THEY LIKE THINGS THAT ARE SWEET. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>SO WE GOT THIS BARREL CONCOCTED HERE. I HIGHLY ANTICIPATE A SUCCESSFUL HUNT.>>HI, HOW ARE YOU DOING, CHRIS?>>GOOD, AND YOURSELF?>>I’M HUNTER.>>I’VE GOT MY NEW MATHEWS HALON HERE. ARE YOU ABLE TO SET IT UP?>>WE CAN MAKE THAT HAPPEN, FOR SURE.>>AWESOME.>>SWEET DEAL. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>SO WHAT WE’RE GONNA DO NOW IS WE’RE GONNA TIE OUR QAD MATHEWS REST INTO THE DOWN CABLE SO WHEN YOU DRAW YOUR BOW BACK, THE REST PULLS UP, AND WHEN YOU LET THE ARROW GO, THE REST DROPS OUT OF THE WAY SO THERE’S NO CONTACT AND YOU CAN’T TORQUE THE BOW AFTER YOU PULL THE TRIGGER. THESE ARE THE BEST RESTS ON THE MARKET, BY FAR. I’VE SHOT ONE FOR THREE YEARS AND I DON’T KNOW WHY I DIDN’T DO IT SOONER. IT’S AS SIMPLE AS PUTTING THAT THROUGH THE CABLE AND LOOSENING THE PRESS BACK UP. FIRST THING I ALWAYS DO WHEN I PULL A BOW OUT OF THE PRESS IS MAKE SURE ALL MY CONNECTIONS ARE WHERE THEY NEED TO BE STILL ‘CAUSE IF YOU START DRAWING BOWS BACK WHEN YOU DON’T GOT CABLES WHERE THEY NEED TO BE, NOT SO GOOD THINGS HAPPEN. SO, SAFETY’S ALWAYS FIRST UP ON THE ARCHERY BENCH HERE. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>SO WE JUST GOT THE REST TIMED IN HERE. THE REST IS WHERE IT NEEDS TO BE. CENTER SHOT IS PERFECT, SO NOW WE CAN ACTUALLY TUNE THE BOW THAT WE GOT THE REST ON HERE. WE DON’T NEED A SIGHT ON THERE TO TUNE IT, WE DON’T NEED OUR QUIVER. WE CAN MAKE SURE THAT WE’RE SHOOTING GOOD THROUGH PAPER, COMING OUT OF THE BOW STRAIGHT IS WHAT WE’RE REALLY AIMING TO DO IN THE TUNING PROCESS. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>WHEN WE’RE SHOOTING THROUGH PAPER HERE, WE’RE JUST LOOKING TO MAKE SURE THAT THE BOW, OR THE ARROW IS COMING OUT OF THE BOW STRAIGHT. THIS TEAR RIGHT HERE, IT’S ACTUALLY A LITTLE BIT TIP LEFT, SO WE GOT A LITTLE BIT OF WORK TO DO YET, BUT IT’S REALLY, REALLY CLOSE. IT COULD BE A NUMBER OF THINGS. IT COULD BE OUR REST IS A LITTLE BIT OFF AND IT COULD ALSO BE THAT I MIGHT’VE TORQUED THE BOW A LITTLE BIT TOO. IT COULD BE HUMAN ERROR, SO I’M GONNA SHOOT ONE MORE JUST TO MAKE SURE, AND WE’LL GO FROM THERE. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>READY TO SHOOT?>>YEAH, READY TO RUMBLE.>>ALL RIGHT.>>LET’S TAKE THIS BAD BOY ON THE RANGE.>>FIRE SOMETHING DOWNRANGE.>>YEAH, SEE IF WE CAN’T HIT SOMETHING. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>THANK YOU, HUNTER.>>YEAH, NO PROBLEM.>>SHOOTING PRETTY GOOD IN THERE.>>YEAH.>>HUNTING SEASON’S RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER, SO I’LL GET IT HOME AND GET IT SIGHTED IN AND HOPEFULLY IT WORKS THIS FALL. I’M SURE IT WILL.>>I’M SURE IT WILL TOO.>>AWESOME. AGAIN, THANK YOU.>>YEAH, NO PROBLEM.>>GOOD LUCK THIS FALL.>>YEAH, YOU TOO.>>BLACK BEARS ARE A NATIVE SPECIES TO THE STATE OF WISCONSIN AND WE’VE HAD BEARS IN THE STATE CONTINUOUSLY, BUT THERE WAS A PRETTY SIGNIFICANT POPULATION DECLINE ALONG WITH A NUMBER OF OTHER LARGE CARNIVORES BETWEEN THE 18 AND 1900’S. POPULATION DECLINED PRETTY CONSIDERABLY AND WAS REALLY RESTRICTED TO THE NORTHERN PART OF THE STATE. AROUND THE MID-1980’S, THERE WAS A RECOGNITION THAT THAT POPULATION WASN’T DOING AS WELL AS WE WOULD’VE LIKED AND SO THERE WERE SIGNIFICANT REGULATORY CHANGES, INCLUDING A SEASON CLOSURE FOR THAT YEAR WHILE CHANGES WERE MADE AND TO WHAT IS NOW SORT OF THE MODERN ERA OF BEAR MANAGEMENT IN THE STATE WITH THE PERMITTING SYSTEM THAT WE CURRENTLY HAVE, THE ZONING OF THE STATE THAT WE CURRENTLY HAVE. AND THE MANAGEMENT WAS REALLY DESIGNED TO INCREASE THE POPULATION AND IT WAS VERY SUCCESSFUL. AT THAT TIME IN THE MID-1980’S, WE ESTIMATED THE POPULATION AROUND 5,000 ANIMALS. AND THROUGH THOSE REGULATORY CHANGES AND CHANGES IN THE WAY THAT WE MANAGE BEARS AND MANAGE HARVESTED BEARS, THE POPULATION GREW FROM THAT POINT TO TODAY WHEN WE HAVE SOMEWHERE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF 28,500 BEARS. SO WE’VE HAD A CONSIDERABLE INCREASE AND HAVE ONE OF THE HIGHEST DENSITY BEAR POPULATIONS IN THE COUNTRY, ACTUALLY.>>SO EVERY TIME I BAIT, I LIKE TO TRY TO KEEP MOST OF MY BAITING PRACTICES CONSISTENT. YOU KNOW, EVERY TIME I GO, I GIVE ‘EM DONUTS. DONUTS ARE ALL CRUSHED UP SO THEY CAN FIT IN THE LOGS. TAKES THE BEARS A WHILE TO EAT IT. THEY CAN’T JUST RUN OFF WITH A WHOLE BIG CLUMP OF FOOD AND GO DEVOUR IT OUT OF SIGHT. THE OTHER THING IS SCENT. YOU KNOW, I SPRAY THE SAME SCENT ATTRACTANT EVERY TIME I GO OUT. BUT YOU KNOW, IN THE END, IT’S ALL UP TO THE BEAR. THEY CAN FIND ANOTHER BAIT A QUARTER MILE FROM WHERE I’M AT, LIKE WHAT THEY’RE GIVING THEM BETTER AND NEVER SHOW UP AT MINE AGAIN. YOU JUST GOTTA KEEP TRYING. THAT’S WHY TRAIL CAMERAS ARE IMPORTANT. YOU CAN SEE WHICH BEARS ARE COMING IN, YOU CAN TELL WHEN THEY’RE COMING, AND ONCE SEASON GETS CLOSER, I’LL BE BAITING MORE FREQUENTLY AND BE GETTING A BETTER PATTERN ON EACH ONE OF THESE BEARS TO BE ABLE TO FIND OUT WHEN I NEED TO BE HUNTING THEM. SO, BUT FOR THE TIME BEING, WE’RE JUST GIVING THEM SOME SNACKS AND TRYING TO GET THOSE ESTABLISHED BEAR TRAILS. THE BEARS WILL CARRY THE SCENT AND HOPEFULLY WE’LL GET A COUPLE EXTRA BEARS COMING IN AND TIME WILL TELL. WE’LL BE TO THE BAIT HERE IN 20 MINUTES AND WE’LL GET OUR EXERCISE FOR THE DAY. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>ALL RIGHT, IT LOOKS LIKE THE BAIT’S BEEN HIT AGAIN. I’M GONNA GET IN AND GET OUT AND WE’LL SEE WHAT WE GOT ON TRAIL CAMERA. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>IT IS THE DAY BEFORE THE WISCONSIN BEAR SEASON OPENER AND OF COURSE, OF ALL DAYS, TODAY IS THE DAY IT DECIDES TO JUST RAIN, BE A WASHOUT, FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS, JUST A MESS. BUT I NEED TO GO CHECK THE CAMERA, BAIT THE BAIT, WHICH I DID TWO DAYS AGO. BUT I’M TRYING TO GET A PATTERN OF THIS BEAR. HE’S BEEN COMING IN EVERY DAY, EVERY OTHER DAY, DEPENDING ON WHEN I’VE BEEN BAITING IT. SO IT SHOULD BE A GOOD OPENING DAY AS LONG AS WE DON’T HAVE SOME CRAZY THUNDERSTORMS ROLLING IN. SO I’M GONNA GET THINGS SET HERE. WE’RE GONNA ROLL OUT TO THE BAIT AND COME BACK AND PROBABLY LOOK AT BEAR PICTURES AND SHOOT THE BOW. LET’S GET IT DONE. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>THINK THE BEAR WILL LIKE THAT? I THINK WE’LL THROW IT IN. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>I’VE BEEN BAITING THIS SINCE JUNE, SO I’VE GOT QUITE A BIT OF TRAIL CAMERA INFORMATION FROM IT. I HAVE A MORE MATURE BEAR CONSISTENTLY HITTING THIS ONE IN THE EVENING DAYLIGHT HOURS. AND THERE IS ANOTHER BEAR THAT I WOULD NOT PASS UP BECAUSE THERE AGAIN, THAT ONE’S ALSO A NICE BEAR. FINGERS CROSSED THAT AT LEAST ONE OF THEM DOES SHOW UP. HOPEFULLY COME TOMORROW EVENING WE’LL BE SITTING IN THE STAND CAMERA READY, BOW READY, AND ONE OF THOSE BIG BEARS WILL SHOW UP. IT’S ALL WE CAN HOPE FOR. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>YOU KNOW, I’VE HAD THIS MATHEWS HALON FOR A LITTLE OVER A MONTH NOW AND WHAT I’VE BEEN DOING IS TRYING TO SHOOT IT EVERY DAY, EVERY OTHER DAY. SIMPLE FACT IS I NEED TO GET USED TO IT. I’VE GOT THIS BLACK BEAR HUNT. DEER SEASON’S RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER. I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING WAS TUNED UP. I TOOK IT INTO SCHEELS. THEY DID THE INITIAL SETUP. WORKED GREAT. I SHOT BETWEEN 200 AND 300 ARROWS THROUGH IT AND THEN I TOOK IT BACK IN TO SCHEELS. THEY RETUNED IT AGAIN. IT WAS JUST SLIGHTLY OFF, NOTHING TOO CRAZY. BUT AS SOON AS THEY DID THAT, I WAS BACK ON TARGET. SO NOW I’M SHOOTING VERY CONSISTENTLY, STACKING ARROWS. THAT’S ABOUT ALL YOU CAN ASK FOR GOING INTO THE HUNTING SEASON. JUST GETTING READY TO HIKE BACK INTO THE BEAR BAIT. GOT MY BOW READY. WE’RE TAKING A LITTLE TREAT FOR ‘EM JUST IN CASE THEY ENDED UP HITTING IT LAST NIGHT. I DID BAIT IT YESTERDAY. BUT WE’RE HERE PLENTY EARLY. IT’S A LITTLE AFTER TWO. WE’LL JUST SLOWLY WORK OUR WAY BACK. I’LL PROBABLY THROW SOME FOOD IN SINCE I HAVE IT ANYWAYS. NO NEED TO SIT WITH FOOD IN THE TREESTANDS. SO WE’LL GET BACK, GET SET UP AND TRY TO FEND OFF THE MOSQUITOS TILL DARK. SHOULD BE A FUN NIGHT. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>WELL, I JUST GOT INTO THE TREESTAND. VERY HUMID OUT. BEARS DIDN’T HIT THE BAIT LAST NIGHT, WHICH IN MY OPINION IS A GOOD THING. HOPEFULLY THEY’LL COME AND HIT IT TONIGHT. WE’VE ALREADY GOT A PORCUPINE LICKING UP SOME OF THE SCENT SPRAY THAT I PUT DOWN. TRY TO COOL OFF HERE, WAIT FOR THE BEARS TO START MOVING. BEAR, BEAR. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC) (CROW CAWS) (BOWSHOT)>>FIRST NIGHT OF BEAR SEASON. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I’VE EVER DONE THIS ON MY OWN. AND THAT IS A VERY NICE WISCONSIN BLACK BEAR THERE. WE HAD A PORCUPINE COMING IN. HE DID NOT LIKE THAT PORCUPINE BEING THERE, AND BECAUSE OF THAT, HE KEPT MOVING AROUND. AND EVENTUALLY, I PULLED BACK. THAT WAS THE THIRD TIME I PULLED BACK. UNREAL, UNREAL. (EXHALES) WHOO. A LOT OF WORK WENT INTO THAT BEAR. ALL RIGHT, LET’S GO GRAB THE ARROW AND START TRACKING THE BEAR.>>OH YEAH, NICE BRIGHT, BRIGHT RED BLOOD. I THINK WE’VE GOT A DOUBLE LUNG PASS THROUGH, PERSONALLY. ALL RIGHT, LET’S SEE WHAT WE CAN FIND. GLAD IT’S NOT RAINING. WHOO. I SEE BLACK.>>I SEE A DEAD BEAR. WE’LL EASE IN ON HIM, JUST IN CASE. WELL, HERE HE IS. WHAT A WISCONSIN BLACK BEAR. BEAUTIFUL COAT ON HIM. I DON’T KNOW WHAT HE’S GONNA AGE, BUT WE’VE GOTTA CUT OUT A COUPLE TEETH AND SEND THEM TO THE DNR AND THEN THEY’LL TELL US HOW OLD HE WAS AT THE TIME. YOU KNOW, HE’S NOT THE KING OF THE WOODS, BUT I COULDN’T BE ANY HAPPIER. YOU PUT IN SO MUCH WORK FOR THESE BEARS AND ALL YOU HOPE FOR IS AT LEAST A MATURE BEAR TO COME IN AND I WOULD SAY THAT HE IS DEFINITELY A MATURE BEAR. COULDN’T BE HAPPIER WITH HIM. I THINK IT’LL BE A LONG NIGHT FOR US, BUT WELL WORTH IT. CLOSED CAPTIONS BY CAPTIONLINK

  1. Yep bear are way higher in B but the bear association makes sure they keep a right lip on zone b . I'm been baiting bears in zone B for years never a bad year with people seeing easy 6 to 10 bears by me . so I would bet it just a little over 1 bear per square Mike lol. I love bear hunting I was lucky one year with a 17 plus year old bear in zone c. . great video guys keep them coming! I also shot a buck that dressed out at 220lbs on video in 2007 on my 10 acres up north. Plus some p y on it 4 to 5 year olds on my 10 and public land. Love the sport. Good luck to everyone this season be safe.

  2. Exactly. I don't understand why so many people run to outfitters to do their blackbear hunting. They're probably the easiest big game to hunt in Canada. I understand if you have only a few days to hunt or have never hunted bear before. But I've gotten three blackbears from just a one week hunt. You might as well go on a farm and shoot livestock.

  3. Congratulations. I just received permission to hunt private land in Zone C where some big bears have been seen. This video was a help for what to do and how to do it.
