22WX ASHLEY: ARCHERY DEER-HUNTING SEASON BEGAN TODAY IN WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS. 22NEWS REPORTER MIKE MASCIADRELLI IS LIVE AT OUR FRANKLIN COUNTY BUREAU TO EXPLAIN THE STATE’S HUNTING REGULATIONS. MIKE MASCIADRELLI: BOW-AND-ARROW HUNTERS WILL BE IN THE WOODS OF WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS LOOKING FOR DEER FOR THE NEXT 6 WEEKS. ARCHERY DEER SEASON IS BACK IN WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS. 22NEWS SPOKE TO AN ERVING HUNTER WHO WAS IN THE WOODS ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE SIX WEEK ARCHERY-SEASON. LEN KAHLE: HUNTER, ERVING I WAS UP AT 3:30 OUT IN THE WOODS AND FACE PAINT IS ALL PART OF IT BEING CAMOUFLAGED, SCENT CONTROL IS ANOTHER HUGE PART OF IT. SAFETY IS ALWAYS OUR NUMBER ONE CONCERN. IN MASSACHUSETTS, YOU MUST BE AT LEAST 15 YEARS OLD TO GET A HUNTING LICENSE. HUNTING IS ALSO ONLY ALLOWED FROM A HALF HOUR BEFORE SUNRISE UNTIL A HALF HOUR BEFORE SUNSET. AND NO HUNTING ON SUNDAYS. MIKE MASCIADRELLI: WORKING FOR YOU ARCHERY SEASON FOR DEER BEGINS OCTOBER 15TH AND RUNS THROUGH NOVEMBE 24TH. THE STATE SETS THESE HUNTING SEASONS IN ORDER TO CONTROL THE DEER POPULATION. MARION LARSON: CHIEF, INFORMATION & EDUCATION MASSACHUSETTS DIVISION OF FISHERIES & WILDLIFE HUNTING IS USED AS A POPULATION MANAGEMENT TOOL IN MASSACHUSETTS. PEOPLE SHOUILD NOT BE SURPRISED THAT THERE ARE FOLKS IN CAMOUFLAGE OUT THERE WITH BOWS AND ARROWS AT THIS TIME. LARSON TOLD 22NEWS ARCHERS HUNTING DEER MUST PURCHASE AN ELECTRONIC STAMP AND HAVE A CERTFIED HUNTING LICENSE. MASSACHUSETTS ARCHERS TOOK MORE THAN 51 HUNDRED DEER DURING LAST YEAR’S ARCHERY SEASON.
