FIRST  GENERATION ]

The Daihatsu Copen 1st Generation 2002-2012, is a 660cc 2-door roadster / coupé with an aluminium retractable hardtop, it won the “Good Design Award” in Japan in 2002, the year of its launch.  It debuted at the 1999 Tōkyō Motor Show, as the Daihatsu Copen concept.  The car first appeared with a 659cc turbocharged engine (JB-DET I4) for the home kei-car market, however this engine did not meet the environmental emission standards for certain export markets, so the Copen was fitted with a more powerful 1.3 non-turbo engine (K3-VE I4) for those markets.

At the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show, Daihatsu revealed two new trim levels of the Copen, the 1.3l and the ‘ZZ’.  The Copen appeared on the UK Top Gear program, but was considered too “toyish” by the presenter James May.

It looks almost like the old Copen, and at 5mm shorter, the same width, and only 45mm higher the OFC-1 is all but identical.  But the biggest change is the switch from a 2 to a 3-piece folding roof.  Here, the main roof section is made from liquid crystals so at the flick of a switch the roof can be made transparent or opaque and it all folds away into the boot in under ten seconds.

Daihatsu Copen 10th Anniversary Edition

Despite being the only convertible kei-car available at the time, on January 13th 2011, Daihatsu announced that it would withdraw the Copen from the European market effective from 31st January 2013 due to the ongoing strength of the Japanese Yen.  Then on April 2nd 2012, Daihatsu announced that Copen production would cease in August 2012 with the final 500 cars being limited 10th Anniversary editions, they had leather seats as well as a commemorative 10th Anniversary door plates.  The 5-speed manual car (MT) retailed at ¥ 1.82 million (£13,784), with the 4-speed sequential (auto) coming in at a slightly lower ¥ 1.8 million (£13,632).
